What is Envision Maine?

Envision Maine is a non-profit, non-partisan think tank that was created in the fall of 2009 by Alan Caron, the founder and past-President of GrowSmart Maine, who was responsible for enlisting the Brookings Institution to come to Maine and to produce their landmark report Charting Maine's Future, in 2006.

Alan is a Maine native with over 30 years of experience as a small business owner, community volunteer, consultant, strategist and writer who has worked on many issues facing Maine.

Envision Maine is building a network of advisers and leaders, researchers and associates. They represent a full spectrum of ideas, backgrounds and experiences, from business, government, academia and the non-profit world. Their common thread is a sense of vision and hope for what Maine can become, a willingness to think in new ways, a respect for different views and an appreciation of the practical realities and difficulties of managing change. (see the adviser list under the REINVENTING MAINE GOVERNMENT section for the beginnings of that list.)

Mostly, they share a love of Maine and a desire to see the state, and its people, advance.

Made in Maine: Maine Coon Cat-Nip

"The Way a Cat's Life Should Be"
Distributed by Kennebec River Company, Vassalboro, Maine

Maine Coon Cat History provided by the Kennebec River Company:

In 1985, the Maine Coon Cat became the official state Cat of Maine. Loved for their unique markings and personalities, today Maine Coon Cats are owned worldwide.

There are several theories as to the origin of the Maine Coon Cat breed. A most intriguing theory traces the breed to the beloved Royal cats of French Queen Marie Antionette. It is said that in preparing to flee the French Revolution the Queen sent her Royal cats and treasures ahead to America. When their Queen never arrived, the Royal cats ended up on their own, eventually forming the gene pool for today's Coon Cat. Others believe that the Coon Cat breed can be traced to Norwegian Skag Cats that rode aboard Viking ships, jumping ship when theVikings landed in New England.

Employers for a Healthy Economy

ABOUT:

Employers for a Healthy Economy is a coalition of organizations representing small and large employers that have joined together to protect the employer-sponsored health care that more than 160 million Americans rely on to keep them healthy.

The legislation being put forth by the House of Representatives will not improve the state of health care. In fact, it will only make health care more expensive for small business, large business and individuals. If we don’t take this opportunity to control the rate of growth in health care costs we are squandering a golden opportunity. Regrettably the current legislation, as the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office has concluded, does little or nothing to control the increasing cost of health care. In fact, current proposals would accelerate cost increases in the health care system.

As we recover from the global economic crisis we cannot afford a proposal that will stifle job creation with new taxes, while doing little to help employers and employees cope with the rising costs of health care.

It is imperative that any health care reform measure considered:

1. Not create a government run healthcare system and thereby undermine private market competition and market-based negotiation;
2. Not tax employer-sponsored health care;
3. Reduce the growth in health care spending rather than accelerate it;
4. Not increase the burden on employers at this difficult economic time.

An Opportunity for Small Businesses to Have Their Voices Heard

November 13, 2009

Below see a message from Karen Mills, Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), about an important upcoming event that we think you may be interested in.

A few weeks ago, President Obama asked the U.S. Small Business Administration and Department of Treasury to convene a forum to discuss how we can best get credit flowing to small businesses to help them make it through this recessions, and put them in a position to grow and create jobs.

We’re hosting the forum next week, and I want to make sure that everyone with a stake in our recovery has their voice heard.

Which is why I’ll be taking your questions live in advance of the event this Monday, November 16th, at 3:15pm EST in a live video discussion through WhiteHouse.gov/live or through the White House’s live-chat application on Facebook.

And whether you can make the chat or not, I’d like to invite you to submit a question ahead of time by emailing us in advance. We’ll post the full video of the chat afterwards.

I’ll be able to share the concerns of small business owners I hear in the chat with the President and Secretary Geithner, at the Small Business Financing Forum and in our conversations and meetings afterwards.

The President called for this forum because he knows that small businesses are the backbone of our economy, and that they’re driving our recovery.

We want to open the doors and bring everyone who’s involved in this historic effort to the table -- from Administration officials and Congressional leaders to lenders and small business owners like yourself – so we’ll also be streaming the conference at live WhiteHouse.gov/blog, Wednesday, November 18th, starting at 9am EST.

Warm regards,

Karen Mills
Administrator
U.S. Small Business Administration
