Governor Baldacci Ceremonially Signs Legislation to Ban Smoking at Outdoor Dining Areas

Governor's Office
Augusta, Maine
June 15, 2009

Governor John E. Baldacci today ceremonially signed LD 820, An Act To Limit Smoking in Outdoor Dining Areas.

The law prohibits smoking in outdoor eating areas such as a patio or a deck that is under the control of an eating establishment.

“It has been my goal to make Maine the healthiest State in the nation,” Governor Baldacci said. “To achieve that goal, we must continue making headway in reducing tobacco use.”

The Governor pointed out that Maine has received national recognition for reducing the rate of smoking among its teenagers and for using Tobacco Settlement Funds for prevention efforts.

The Governor was joined at the ceremonial signing by bill sponsor Rep. Joan Cohen (D-Portland) and supporters of the legislation.

Statism: A political viewpoint "that sovereignty is vested not in the people but in the national state, and that all individuals and associations exist only to enhance the power, the prestige, and the well-being of the state. The fascist concept of statism repudiates individualism and exalts the nation as an organic body headed by the Supreme Leader and nurtured by unity, force, and discipline."
